Thoughts on Nationality in European TF2

November 20th Commentary
Tagged: language nationality tf2

Natural — In a time of ever-growing European unity, where even the French speak English to a somewhat understandable degree, the room for national belonging would appear to be slight. Indeed, the current trend is one of internationalisation with little room for the conservative conformism of being defined by one’s nationality. We are all European citizens as well as citizens of the world.

This not only holds true in the everyday lives we lead, it is also a factor when we play TF2 competitively. Whenever we go on IRC to find a game, it is an international environment. Every time we play a match, we are likely to square off against a multitude of nationalities. However, the pluralism of cultures does not only apply to our in-game foes: Even our own team mates are often going to be natives of other countries than the one we hail from. While I recognise the necessity for team diversity within a community that essentially isn’t very large, I also feel that the lack of single-nationality rosters is a shame.

Pre-Season Movers & Shakers: Addendum

September 20th Commentary

Admirable — Welcome to the end. The stunning anti-climax to all the best-laid plans of mice clutching men… and oh how they have gone astray. The playoffs have been played out and divisions dusted. There is no more room for speculation, other than on what could have been.

A couple of teams were on my radar, marked out for column inches, but were ultimately unable to meet the administrators’ criteria for Division 1 or the playoffs. Yet they still had a part to play in the unfolding dramas of the last five days.

Pre-Season Movers & Shakers: Part 4

September 14th Commentary

Admirable — The administrative machinery of the ETF2L seems to be working relatively smoothly in the light of the big changes at the top. Less than twenty four hours after the Season 16 signup deadline had past we had the Provisional Divisions thrust in to our sweaty palms. Of course, I am disappointed by the limited nature of the playoffs, but I said enough about that yesterday in Part 3.

You would be mistaken if you thought the fourth instalment of this gossip epic would merely consist of the dregs of the talent pool. There are a few surprises in store today and perhaps more teams still to cover and updates to confirm in a fifth and final episode, so pardon my brevity.

The arrival of the provisional divisions has stolen my thunder to a certain extent. Teams that you may not have been aware of are no longer hidden in the shadowy depths of’s cavernous halls. It’s all out there now, displayed in broad daylight, and even worse, some of them are in Division 2. Oh my! I feel a little queasy. This is not the domain of a Premiership Ambassador. Let’s get this over and done with. First up is a brace of Russian te… wait… STOP THE PRESSES!

Pre-Season Movers & Shakers: Part 3

September 13th Commentary

Admirable — Gossip. Gossip never changes. The fallout from Parts 1 & 2 continues to rain down, mutating teams strong enough to evolve and sucking the life out of less fortunate rosters. The ETF2L Season 16 signup deadline has officially passed as of midnight last night. It’s at this time every season that I lock horns with my nemesis, Sonny Black, over the scope of the inevitable pre-season Premiership playoffs.

The industrious German would have you believe he is no longer ETF2L Head Admin, but everyone knows Permzilla is just his puppet; his evil roots run deep under Europe. Damn, this tinfoil hat is really starting to chafe, but you could barely even call this a conspiracy theory. A character assassination at best, but the man revels in playing the role of the wet blanket.

Every season I request that anyone who has the desire and at least some justification of a claim to Premiership status should be given a shot through playoffs, and every season the killjoys win. They would maintain that there simply isn’t enough time, preferring to let their own warped sense of who is worthy dictate who will be seated at the top table in Team Fortress 2. Yet every season no changes are made, no allowance made for proper playoffs.
